If you’re looking for classic, fresh donuts, Carlson’s Donuts should make your shortlist. There’s nothing fancy or artisan about the menu here. But there are good, traditional donuts, brilliantly executed.
Amongst the customer favorites are the potato donut, sour cream, blueberry, chocolate glazed, apple fritter and bow tie. The customer service gets rave reviews too, and the prices are very reasonable.
The shop opens for takeout only for six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday. Opening hours are 5am to 11.30am – but make sure you get there early for the best selection. This is a popular spot, and they can sell out fast.
2. Donut Shack

The Donut Shack is a great place to pick up some classic donuts. You’ll also find other pastries, like muffins, cookies and “Shack tarts”. And there’s good quality coffee from Ceremony Coffee Roasters.
But it’s the donuts, made fresh daily, that are the star of the show. The range covers all the classics, although the options on offer vary day to day. The full menu includes old fashioned plain donuts, apple or Dutch crumb, fudgy, lemon and Boston Cream.
You can always get hold of some delicious donut holes too. Buy your donuts individually, or get a discount on a box of a half-dozen or dozen.
The shop is open daily for dine in or takeout, from 6 in the morning to 8 at night. Or you can get your donuts delivered to your door from 7am to 10am on the weekends.
3. Diablo Donuts

Diablo Donuts in Baltimore is the home of some devilishly decadent donuts. And they’re beautifully decorated too, making them perfect for a special occasion as well as an everyday treat.
The donuts here have distinctive names. There’s the Panty Dropper (maple and bacon) and Unicorn Farts (vanilla bean glaze, cereal and purple drizzle). And check out the Sin (cinnamon) Crunch, Infringement, 666 and Baltimore Scream. It’s all a lot of fun.
But it’s not just about the giggle – these donuts taste great too. They’re made fresh daily, in small batches, and using top quality ingredients.
You can order for delivery online, though note there’s a limit of two dozen donuts and at least a day’s notice is needed. Or pop into the shop to order takeout. It’s open from 6am to 1pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 8am to 2pm on weekends.

Arundel Donut offers a great range of pastries, including some of the best croissant donuts – or cronuts – out there.
Everything is made fresh, and the donut sizes are generous. Expect light, fluffy textures and flavors like strawberry glazed, maple, marshmallow and apple. Check out the potato donut too – it gets excellent reviews from customers.
Make sure you get there early, as they often sell out. And note that only cash is accepted here. If you’re catering a larger event, get in touch – they can do big orders with advance notice.

The name of Sandy Pony Donuts pays homage to the ponies of Chincoteague Island, where it started life as a food truck. Today it has four different outlets, and this one in Annapolis offers what some have called the best donuts in Maryland.
The concept is similar to Duck Donuts: a fresh donut made to order, then customized with your choice of coatings and drizzles.
There are also 24 pre-defined flavors if you need inspiration. Options include the Aww Shucks, with honey glaze and rainbow sprinkles, and the Salted Caramel, with caramel glaze and pretzels. Other combos incorporate chocolate, coconut, mint, peanut butter, banana – you name it, you’ll find it here!
There’s also a great range of bubble teas, plus smoothies and acai bowls.

Mochi Mochi is the home of delicious mochi donuts, made with Japanese rice flour. They’re light, sweet and chewy – and if you haven’t already tried them, put that right soon!
The flavors here include matcha, ube bae, strawberry, churro, and cookies and cream. There’s also a funfetti cake donut, and a mochi donut flavored with Vietnamese coffee that’s a customer favorite.
They’re not the cheapest, but if you buy five you get one free.
