So disappointed in this business. My aunt and I were highly recommended to come here by a venue. We are planning my grandma’s memorial service and came to inquire about desserts. We asked the young man, Luis, behind the counter several questions. He was pretty rude and not helpful. We asked what the most popular items were, flavors, etc. and he was so short with us and acted as if we were a burden for asking. He had no people skills and was very insensitive. It’s hard enough dealing with what we’re going through and having terrible customer service made it worse. We let him know what the occasion was and he did not offer any help or any kind of sympathy. He took down my info and order and said we’d get a call the next day. I never got a phone call back. I’ve called, messages on Instagram, and been trying to contact the owner before posting a review but no response. This breaks my heart as my grandma was a loyal customer before she passed away and we would have loved to serve her favorite pastries. My aunt also was a loyal customer but will not be returning. Some advice to the owner: Be careful who you hire. Your employee ruined my aunt’s day and a chance for business from us and our friends and family.

I used to love getting cookies from Max’s at the former Bothof’s location on Main St. They absolutely had the best cookies and almond bear claws in town. But the last three visits (December 2021, February and August 2022) I’ve been treated very poorly by staff, who acted very inconvenienced when I asked any questions about desserts in the cases that weren’t labeled and seemed rushed to get me out of there—when they were not at all busy. If you don’t want to explain a flavor, simply place a card in front of the pastry to differentiate them.

On top of the poor customer service, my pastries just lacked in quality in comparison to what they used to be. The rocky road brownie, however, was outstanding, but not enough to get me to continue to return as a customer anymore. Very disappointed, and I do hope they evaluate some of the staff they have in place.

I got Max’s Cookie Company for my wedding 10/23/2021. My original wedding had to be postponed a year because of covid when we notified them I got a very sweet and understanding message from them. That’s when I knew I picked the right company. My husband and I don’t like cake too much so we got a bunch of their mini desserts for a wedding. They set up my dessert bar so perfectly, I loved it!!! I can honestly say there was nothing left. All my guests wanted to know where we got our desserts from! So happy we had them apart of our day!

Complete rubbish. If this is what passes for baked goods in this area, I would instead save my hard-earned money and buy a box of Oreos. Hard pass!!

Max made our wedding cake (and assorted donuts for a donut wall), and we LOVED everything he made. I couldn’t stop devouring the cookies & cream cake, and people raved about how great the lemon/raspberry cake was. The donuts were also a big hit. Don’t let the name of the business fool you – Max’s is about more than cookies. I’d recommend that any bride & groom in the area do a tasting with him!
It’s also worth mentioning that multiple people in my family – who each have a sweet tooth – say that Max’s Cookie company makes the best chocolate chip cookie they’ve ever had in their lives.

***OUR FIRST TIME AND OUR LAST***
I try and support local businesses as often as I can, and I know that the Covid-19 Pandemic has had a negative effect on our local businesses and their ability to keep their doors open. I also understand that customer service is paramount when you have your own business. I wish I could leave a positive review about Max’s Cooking Company, but instead I have come away having been treated rudely by the owner and shown my business and patronage didn’t matter.

Earlier in October, with my two sons’ birthdays approaching, we were picking up lunch at Masarus and saw Max’s Cookie Company. We bought some tasty cookies and saw they did cakes. Although we typically order our cakes from another Bakery in town, I decide that while we were already at Max’s I thought we would give them a try.

Luis took our order and provided excellent customer service. He guided me through the order process. I asked then if I could speak with the baker to ask a few questions, but was told he was unavailable. So Luis and I finalized and placed our order, paid, and we set 2:00 PM for our order to be ready for pick up on Saturday, 10/31. A few days later, Luis called to let me know the bakery would be “closing early on Halloween” and “would 12 Noon be a good time to pick up our order.” I said yes, and then was told our cake would be ready BY NOON and Not MUST BE PICKED UP BY NOON!

So Saturday the 31st, we were out running errands and finishing our last stop at the grocery store before heading to the bakery to pick up our birthday cake when Luis called at 11:57 AM and left a voicemail with a “Courtesy call “to remind us that “our order was ready for pickup and just a reminder that we close at 1:00 today.” We were finishing our party shopping in the grocery store when we received a call from Max, the owner, ten minutes later, after Luis’s initial courtesy call. Max informed me that they were closed, and unless I wished to pick up my cake on Monday (our party is Sunday), I needed to come now. I said my wife and I finishing in the grocery store and could be there within 10 minutes. Our order went from “available to pick up at Noon” to Luis’s call to come before 1 PM closing, to 10 minutes later a call from Max, “if you don’t come within 5 minutes you won’t have your cake.” Hating to keep anyone waiting, I tried to clarify that we were close and on our way in minutes, he kept speaking over me and asked me “If I was coming or what?” because he would “only leave the doors unlocked for another 5 minutes.”

We left the check-out line without our groceries so we could get to the bakery ASAP. When we arrived at the bakery within five minutes. I asked to speak with Max. I was told he was “unavailable”. I identified myself and my prepaid order. I asked about closing time, apologized that I was confused about the pick-up time based on what I was originally told, Luis’s recent voice mail 15 minutes earlier, and then the terse phone call from Max. Suddenly Max appeared and was “available.” I attempted to share the story above, and I was treated rudely and cut off. Max said that was not what I was told (although I have the voice mails still from Luis). When I raised my concerns and explained I felt like I was being treated rudely, Max deflected, denied, and dismissed my concerns. I was made to feel as if my business and my $40 for a custom cake was not worth his time.

Being pretentious and rude is not a great business model for good customer service from any employee, especially from the owner. I am not sure what this cake tastes like yet as the party is tomorrow. But at this point, my horrible experience has already ruined our party. If it wasn’t too late to get a replacement cake, I would have thrown this one in the trash on my way out. I will never return and do my best to share my experience with others so they can avoid rude service. Word of mouth is important in small towns like Visalia. Although you will have to weigh your options, I cannot recommend Max’s due to my horrible experience today.

I enjoy Max’s bakery! Always a variety of tasty cookies and pastries made from scratch! I finally got the chance to taste his white cake with raspberry filling, super delicious! Always my go to place for something sweet! Thank you Max and employees!

My husband and I found Max as we were trying to plan our small elopement from Florida. From the beginning, he was so incredibly helpful and kind, and took the time to do a cake/dessert tasting a year before our wedding! He made our wedding cake and an assortment of desserts for our small amount of guests. Everything was beyond delicious!! I couldn’t have asked for anything so tasty and beautifully made. Our wedding cake was everything we wanted, and Max was also kind enough to allow us to ship our faux florals from Florida to his shop, as well as place our cake flowers for us! The customer service we received was astounding, and I will wholeheartedly send anyone in the Visalia area his way for the most delicious deserts!
