Can cereal grow mold?

Yes, cereal can grow mold under the right set of conditions. Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in moist, warm environments and can reproduce rapidly. As such, cereal can easily become a breeding ground for mold spores if it isn’t stored correctly, is opened and exposed to the environment, or otherwise comes in contact with mold spores present in the environment.

These conditions can be caused by the improper storage of cereal, including storing it in an area that has more moisture than cereal should typically be exposed to, or an area that provides a warm and moist environment for mold spores to thrive.

Additionally, cereal can become exposed to mold spores when it is opened and exposed to air and/or the environment.

If cereal has been exposed to these conditions and/or has been kept in an area that provides an environment suitable for mold growth, its important to inspect the cereal itself for signs of mold. 1. While I agree that consuming expired cereal is risky, I am happy to report I discovered an old box of Malt-O-Meal cream of wheat on the shelf. Despite being 15 years old (2008 date), I have successfully consumed it for multiple breakfasts. Adding a little maple syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon, sliced banana, and a few drops of half&half, and Yum! The package had been previously opened, but the plastic sleeve was intact over the “spout”. Was stored in a dry upper cabinet. High recommendation for this product.

  2. No, Malt-O-Meal does not need to be discarded if not used for seven days after opening. That is patently ridiculous. An opened box of Malt-O-Meal will last until well after the expiration date. If you had to throw out the box a week after opening it, 95% of all the Malt-O-Meal sold would be wasted. No one eats an entire box in a week. A box lasts most people a full year.
